Tanda is non-custody
This is the most important thing to understand about Tanda, and we build the whole product around it.
- Tanda does not hold money.
- Tanda does not move money.
- Tanda does not process payments.
- Tanda does not release funds.
- Tanda does not guarantee any receiving outcome.
Tanda records proof, verification, and coordination, and helps your group communicate. Every payment happens through your group's own external methods — M-Pesa, bank, SACCO, or cash — and you remain responsible for those payments and their reconciliation.
What this means legally
Because Tanda never takes possession of or control over your funds, Tanda is not a bank, money transmitter, payment processor, escrow agent, deposit-taker, lender, or insurer, and does not provide a regulated financial service. Your association or circle continues to hold and move its own money exactly as it does today; Tanda simply keeps a trustworthy, append-only record of what happened.
What this means for members
You never fund a Tanda wallet, and there is no Tanda balance to top up or withdraw. If you ever see a request to send money "to Tanda," treat it as a warning sign and tell us — that is never how Tanda works.
